WHY DR. AMBEDKAR CHOSE NAGPUR FOR CONVERSION TO BUDDHISM ?
NAGPUR : Why Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar chose Nagpur to renounce Hinduism ? Was this city being HQ of RSS a reason behind his conversion to Buddhism ? Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar gave explanation to this question in his longspeech delivered on October 15 , 1956 , second day of the conversion ceremony .
He , according to a report in Prabudh Bharat , said ,” Many people ask me why Nagpur was decided upon for this work. Why didn’t the conversion take place in some other city? Some people say that because the great batallion of the R.S.S. was here in Nagpur, we took the meeting to this city in order to lay them flat.
This is completely untrue. This program was not brought here to Nagpur because of that. Our work is so great that even one minute in a lifetime cannot be wasted. I don’t have enough time to make an ill omen for others by scratching my nose!”
According to him , it was not RSS but history of Nag people who were Buddhist and were great fighters , that he chose Nagpur for this program .According to him , if anyone spread Buddhism in India , they were Nag people .They were fierce fighters and were considered as fearful enemies of Aryans .So , he chose Nag – Pur of nag people for his conversion to Buddhism .
