YANGON: Hundreds of the Buddhist protesters attacked an international aid team and blocked the International Red Cross relief being sent to trapped Rohingya Muslims while they forced International Red Cross officials to unload the entire 50 metric tons of relief material .
They also triggered riot when police tried to prevent them. They threw petrol bombs and stones at the UN relief team, an d attacked them with lathis to force them to unload entire 50 metric tons relief material.
The eyewitnesses said that after the Buddhist protesters threw petrol bomb , police fired in air to disperse them .The shipment of relief material was organized by The International Committee of Red Cross ICRC) .According to reports the relief material was brought by ships at the jetty of Rakhine state capital Sittwe late last night .But hundreds of the Buddhist protesters gathered at the jetty .
They stopped the unloading of the relief material at the dock .Many protesters carried sticks , and metal bars and they had petrol bomb s with them .They hurled petrol bombs at the relief party .The police tried to stop them but when they were out of control , police fired in air to disperse them .
Some persons were injured in this rioting while 8 persons were detained by the police, it is said.
The reports said that this incident has hampered the relief work for lakhs of Rohingya Muslims who are trapped inside Rakhine state and they need urgent help .The mob which resorted to violence and rioting forced International Red Cross officials to unload the aid from the boat and they also prevented the boats to return .ICRC confirmed the incident of attacks on their relief team in Rakhine state capital , by hundreds of Buddhists rioters .
ICRC spokesperson Grazziela Piccoli asserted that the relief work will continue and their organization will try to send relief material reach inside Rakhine state.” We will carry on .Nothing has been put on hold ,” she said .
