Demolition of illegal Religious Structures Continue in Mumbai

MUMBAI: The demolition of all illegal religious structures continues in Mumbai. According to Municipal sources, all the illegal religious structures in public places will be pulled down by August 31, while Bombay High court has given BMC a deadline of November 21.

But in a city like Mumbai, illegal constructions in general is a big problem and BMC has completely failed not only to keep a check on new illegal construction activity but it has also failed to act against a large number of illegal construction.

BMC has always been accused of corruption which is the main reason of unchecked illegal construction in Mumbai. Another government agency which is held responsible for large number of illegal construction activities in the city is police. But sheer negligence and even to the large extent collusion of these agencies result in illegal construction.

BMC is carrying out demolition of illegal religious structures on the order of Bombay High court. According to Municipal sources, only 482 illegal religious structures were to be demolished or shifted as they were identified in B category.

These illegal religious structures were found encroaching upon the public spaces and they were considered as hindrance in development works. All these 482 religious structures are being demolished by BMC anti encroachment staff. The BMC included 221 illegal shrines in “A” category and All these shrines will be regularised.

According to sources, BMC staff have demolished 272 shrines till this week and demolition of the remaining 210 illegal structures will be completed by August 31. All ward offices have been instructed to finish such demolitions quickly as the festival season will begin shortly.

BMC  has its own way of working. The drive, which has been undertaken just to face the Bombay high court, when hearing of the said case will be resumed but real spirit to act against prevention and removal of all illegal construction in the city is still lacking.
