CHINA MOVING AHEAD TO BECOME THE NEXT SUPER POWER?

NEW DELHI: Some recent developments have indicated that China has been stepping ahead to become the next ‘Super Power’ replacing US.  These Chinese moves may be serious challenge for US to retain its position as super power.

Recently, China decided to make ‘Djibouti’,the African coastal nation, its first overseas military base. It is seen as China’s first step overseas, to unfold its plan to challenge US dominance as super power.

China sent its troops to Djibouti, which has very strategic geo-political importance. Decision to establish military base in Djibouti is seen as the action oriented message to hitherto Super Power, US and its allies.

It is said that China has also strategy and plans to play the role of ‘World Super Power’. Therefore it has   decided to deploy two Chinese navy war ships and an unspecified number of army troops in Djibouti.

The African country Djibouti is strategically located and is called as ‘Horn of Africa’. China has, for the first time, deployed its military overseas and Chinese media commented that it is not a commercial re-supply point and this base can support Chinese troops, navy to go farther.

There is worrying trend for US and its allies in China expanding its military ties in Africa. China also increased its economic activities, at a very high speed during the last decade. It is said that over one million Chinese Nationals are employed in Africa, most of them working for infra-structure projects.

Now, China’s involvement in African security is a matter of concern for rival western powers, who see bigger economic, security, military and strategic threat in it.

US also have its military base in Djibouti since 2002. The US military base is located at Camp Lemonier, which is just few miles away from this new Chinese military base. Djibouti has also rented its deserts to France and Japan, who have also stationed their troops there.

Although China has clarified that it does not want military expansion, but US think-tanks are very much apprehensive.

They are perusing Chinese acts as a threat. They are calling the establishment of first overseas military base of China, as its move towards global strategies.
