BOMBAY FORT WAS BUILT DUE TO FEAR OF WAR

MUMBAI : The British East India Company which took possession of Bombay from Portuguese constructed the walled city in the FORT .The British company raj feared wars and attacks and the traders , business community wanted a safe city , therefore Company Sarkar constructed the walled city in FORT area .

The British East India Company spent Rs.2.5 lakhs to fortify this main Bombay city. The traders gave Rs.30,000 as their contribution of making the Bombay Fort , a safe area to live in and do business .

During 1739 , the British ruled Bombay had fear of attacks from Marathas  , French , Spanish and others  .There were also rumours of wars  of England with French and Spain .Traders in the then Bombay were very frightened as Bombay was a very new and developing city then.

 

So they agreed to bear the expenses of construction of ditches around the walls of Fort area as the precautionary measure .The work of Bombay  FORT city was completed in 1743 .

A war was actually declared in 1744 but by then the actual Bombay city and its harbor in Fort area was made safe from invaders .
