If you ask me to name one of the most iconic couples from the 70’s, it has to be Hema Malini and Dharmendra. Falling in love is not the difficult thing, surviving through it while keeping it alive is, and nobody knows it better than these lovebirds right here.
Marriage for them wasn’t a cakewalk. While Hema was living the ‘Dream Girl’, Dharmendra was the most eligible bachelor in town. Both of them were at peak of their career, and that is when love stroked in.
There were a lot of rumors regarding the couple created back then, but here are a few facts about their story you mustn’t be aware of
1. Sanjeev Kumar’s Proposal
The rumours that actor Sanjeev Kumar proposed to Hema Malini were actually true. Sanjeev had propsed her during the movie ‘Sholay’, however Hema had straight away rejected his proposal as she was then dating Dharmendra.
Angry and heartbroken Sanjeev persuaded director Ramesh Sippy, to not create any scene with him and Hema Malini. He was so depressed that he took to extreme alcohol addiction, which led to his declining health. He eventually died from a heart-attack.
2. When Jeetendra- the middleman fell for the actress
Sanjeev Kumar used Jeetendra to express his feelings to the actress. Jeetendra who was supposed to be a middleman actually fell for Hema instead. Hema recalls how they were almost going to get married.
3. How they got converted to Islam
Not many people know this but Hema and Dharmendra did get themselves converted to Islam in order to get married.
Dharmendra’s first wife Prakash Kaur had denied giving a divorce and therefore he adopted Islam, as the religion allows more than one marriage for a man. Hema too converted to Islam.
Doesn’t this show how much in love the two of them were?
So much that they didn’t even care about what people would think or say about them.
4. Dharmendra already had a family
As mentioned, Dharmendra was already married to Prakash before he tied the knot with Hema. The actor had two sons with his first wife- Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol. Prakash didn’t want to divorce him because she was heartbroken with his relationship with Hema and was worried about her two kids too. However, Dharam maintained a proper balance between both families- One with Prakash and two sons-Sunny and Bobby, and another with Hema and two daughters- Esha Deol and Ahana Deol.
5. Tension between both the families
Prakash was never really fond of Dharmendra’s second family. However Sunny and Bobby shared a good bond with half-sisters Esha and Ahana
When Hema invited Sunny and bobby to the marriage of her daughters, they both didn’t show up. This caused a rift between both families. It is said that both the sons were close to their mother Prakash, and might have abandoned the marriage on her instructions.
6. Hema’s parents being against the marriage
No father would wish for his daughter to marry a much older man who already has a wife and two sons. Moreover, Hema’s step of converting into Islam was totally unacceptable to him.
However, Hema still chose to go against her family’s will and married Dharmendra. This left Hema’s mother grief-stricken to much extent.
